July 4th

Just enough rain this year, not too much heat.  Garden is in full swing with squashes, basil, cucumbers, beans, and beyond.  Bugs are starting to find things.  Kids have had a good time picking and munching.

Just eight days later, cucumber!

Yellow Squash
I find the yellow squash leaves interesting.  They are big and prickly just like all the other squash leaves, but this plant has bright blue patches within the geometric veins.

June 1st Update

The weather has been beautiful this year for gardening!  Perfect amount of rain here, and the heat has come on slowly.  Here's a picture update for June 1st.

Cucumber
Yellow Squash, and Butternut are on their way to fruiting.  Cucumbers are heavy with flowers.

Butternut Squash
Hot Banana Pepper
Basil plants from last weekend are taking off, as well as the hot banana peppers and jalapenos.

The tomatoes are growing big.  Thankfully Erin and John got the trellises in last week, they would be toppling over in just one week's worth of growth.  And...we've got tomatoes!

Parsley

Corn
Beans

Sungold Cherry Tomatoes
Lillian and I thinned the lettuce for the second time today.  French Sorrel was ready to pick from.  There is enough of the greens to share already, now we just need a party-night.

I am in complete awe every year when the garden grows!

Garden Inventory

Garden is in need of:

More Basil x 4-8
Eggplants x 1-2
Lavender
Bell peppers?
Other Herbs?
Anything else?

Tomato Trellises that support 2 rows x 7 feet.
Jessi's trellises may go to supporting the renegade tomato plants.

I plan on moving over some oregano from my garden, but planting it in a way that's fairly contained.

We have a fair amount of space to fill in, probably with mature seedlings at this point in the season.

May 17th Photo Update

Lettuce needs thinning!
Pepper seedlings on the right.

Many many renegade heirloom tomato plants growing,
including the one in the bottom center of the picture.
I can't wait to see what they amount to.

Tomato rows, and renegade marigolds.  Lots of them!
And one basil plant too small to see yet that sprouted itself also.

New pea and bean trellis went in, plus some extra beans.

Buds on the Butternut squash!

I put in a watermelon, two corn stalks, and another tomato plant,
Thanks to the contribution of Leis, John and Sage this week!

Just because it's pretty.

May 8 - Update

Hey, wanted to give an update on the garden.  To state the obvious, but with enthusiasm: it's Growing!   We have an abundance of renegade marigolds and tomato plants coming up from a previous season in one area.  Kudos to heirloom tomatoes!   I think there's a random basil plant growing too.  I have to be careful when I pull weeds to make sure it's not something unexpected coming up.  There's also an abundance of oak helicopters starting to sprout, I've been trying to yank them out.

There is an eggplant and a cucumber plant that we put in the ground before it had sprouted, and they seem not to be growing.  We might have to grab some from the store if after I get back from my trip they still aren't up.  Yellow squash, spaghetti squash, and butternut all look strong and healthy.

Lettuce is already the size of a thumbnail.  Peas are good.

In the next few weeks we'll need to come up with something for tomato trellises. I have some at the house I can use, since I don't have tomatoes in my own garden this year.  We'll figure something out.

Rain this weekend will take care of the water situation while I'm away.  Thank you Christy for letting us use your spicket.  It's much easier than carrying water across the street.

Pictures soon enough.  Possibly we can make plans for next weekend when I'm back to build stuff...trellises or whatever else.  There's always something in need in the garden.

April 24 - Headway

Kerry, Tara, and Jay hand tilled the ground to make way for seedlings.  Thank you Kerry for thinking ahead with planting in peat pots.

Wee butternut squash plant, may you grow big and fruit plentiful.
DIY copper wrapped milk carton strips make for stylish tags by Jay.
I'm going to learn something from this level of fancy.
Nice artwork Brian!

April 6th

After a tasty brunch, and a 2 mile run around the block, we weeded the beds getting them ready for grow season.  Kerry, Jay, Skye, Erin, John, Cailen, Ellie, Noah, Tara, Lillian, and Brian all helped out to make short work of a weed pile.  Great weather!
